Ohio Notary Practice Exam

Ask two Ohio notary candidates how many questions were on their exam and you might get two different answers, both correct. Ohio doesn't run one centralized test. The Secretary of State authorizes multiple education providers, and each builds its own version of the required 3-hour class and closed-book exam, typically 20 to 30 questions, 80% to pass, within the state's content guidelines.

What stays constant across every provider's version: the topics. State law requires every approved exam to cover commission term length and renewal, grounds for revocation, legal notarial acts, correctly completing acknowledgments and administering oaths, and deposition procedures.

The combined class-and-test fee runs $130, non-refundable. Fail, and you can retake after a 30-day wait. Your certificate of completion is only good for 12 months, so there's a real cost to letting time pass between finishing your course and submitting your application.

Before any of this, Ohio requires you to be a legal resident (or an Ohio-practicing attorney), have no disqualifying criminal convictions, and clear a Bureau of Criminal Investigation records check. Attorneys skip the exam requirement specifically, though not the education component.
